    Speech from the Throne pledges new relationship with Indigenous peoples

    Canada’s Governor General David Johnston opened the 42nd session of Parliament today with the speech from the throne,¬†outlining Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government’s agenda for the coming session.

    The relatively short speech, titled “Making real change happen,” promised tax breaks for the middle class, the launch of an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, electoral and Senate reform, carbon pricing and investments in clean technology, and enhancements to the Canada Pension Plan and new Child Benefit.
